Why ‘La rentrée’ is ideal for home improvements

It doesn’t seem to matter what age we are; the start of September will always feel like the perfect time to start something new. Whether we’re actually going ‘Back to school’ or not, Autumn is very much a turning point in the year. The leaves start to change, the days grow shorter, we put our Summer clothes away for another year… But then what? Well, if you don’t already have any projects in the pipeline, we suggest cracking on with some home improvements in preparation for the coming months…

Create a Study Area

If you have kids, there’s a good chance you’re going to need somewhere for them to do their homework, if you don’t already have a designated study area. Whether you go all out and hire an architect or surveyor to help you add a whole new room to your house, get a joiner in to help you transform an existing room by fitting some shelves above a desk space, or have some bespoke furniture made, your kids are sure to benefit.

Prepare to Get Cosy

As the Summer sun loses its power and the crisper days of Autumn start to creep in, the ideal relaxation scenario shifts from a lazy afternoon in the garden to curling up with some cocoa (or a hot toddy!) in front of a roaring fire. Keep the dream (and your family) alive by paying someone to sweep your chimney, so you’re all set when the cold really kicks in. Haven’t got a fire but like the idea of having one? Why not consider installing a woodburner and giving your home a Scandinavian vibe.

Batten Down the Hatches!

Speaking of fires… No matter how many logs you throw on them, they’re no good if your house isn’t well insulated. First stop: the roof. Now’s the time to get any repairs done, quick, before the wind picks up! And while you’re up there… If you don’t have any insulation in your attic, get some fitted now to avoid losing heat and money over the Winter months. Don’t forget to get draughty windows and doors fixed too!

Pull Your Socks Up

They’re the most used rooms in the house, so it’s hardly surprising that kitchens and bathrooms can easily become rather tatty – especially if you tend to have lots of visitors. Smarten up with some minor improvements, such as new cupboard doors (even just new knobs will make a big difference!), or, if you’ve got a bit more in the kitty, why not turn over a whole new leaf with some freshly painted walls, a new tiled surface, or a total redesign?

Home Time…

Of course, there are myriad home improvements you can make at this time of year. If you have a project in mind but need some help making it a reality, have a look at our list of approved artisans and rest easy in the knowledge that your best laid plans are in safe hands.

Not planning on hanging around over the Winter months? We don’t blame you! (Although France can be breathtakingly beautiful at all times of the year). Just be sure to give yourself some peace of mind by leaving your home under the watchful eye of a professional property manager.
